1190 Inuit spirit describes how they lived and evolved.
Geoff starts by explaining what he is being shown, and then the Inuit spirit takes over.
(Geoff)
I have an Inuit Eskimo. He is going to tell me a story. He is sitting, facing me covered in all his furs, behind him is all ice and snow. Their way of life was very minimalistic, but today there are many problems. This seems to be a like a wise old man who passed over some time ago and he’s saying that there are two types.
Your modern Inuit has been introduced to Western society and they sort of live on the outskirts of towns and they tend to become, very sort of addicted to alcohol. And a bit like the Africans here, shanty towns and so on. Up there it’s a lot harsher.
But it’s something which they haven’t really experienced before. So it’s sort of simplified, all they have to do is earn money and buy booze. That’s the way. So I said that’s one side of it.
There are two extremes. The other side, which where he came from before he passed over was a basic way of living which went back many centuries. And it was very minimalistic. All they did was they fished mainly, they hunted occasionally polar bears, very occasionally, and did a little bit of trapping.
And most of their time was spent with families, most of the time in isolation. One of the big advantages that they had there was that the energy around that area was very pristine. It wasn’t affected, whereas in a big city you have all this negative energy going backwards and forwards and around in circles. Out there it was very pristine energy and hardly anything was affected. Where there was a little bit of a negative energy created it was soon dispersed because it had nothing to latch on to.
(Spirit takes over) Marriage was in a way organized. We would meet other tribes and they may be a hundred kilometers away but we would make a plan and we would trek over and we would stay there for a few days, and during that period it was known as a sort of a time for the young to meet and possibly marry and so on; and if a union was made, if a couple decided to fall in love….. we understand now that a lot of things were done too quickly but when there is very little choice this is what happens so a couple would meet, they decided they were going to become a couple, there’d be a ceremony and the families would unite and they would decide where they were going to live, so one more man would be introduced into the village to look after the village, and this often resulted in problems for a whole variety of reasons. They lasted a lot longer and even though the unions weren’t perfect, they were suitable for that particular era. The wives were taught the basics of sewing, hunting, fishing, and cooking of course. And where there was childbirth, it was very much you get the local midwife. Quite a few babies died through not having modern surgery there. But on the other hand, the ones that survived were the stronger ones and it was acceptable for that particular period. Now fish stocks, lots of fishing was done, occasionally whaling. And that was quite something because we’d all go out in boats and we would all harpoon one whale and that would be slowly dragged back to shore, dragged onto shore, cut up and used for all sorts of things. We would sometimes spend weeks simply cutting it up boiling it turning into fat and getting as much as possible out of it. What else can I tell you? Religion let’s just look at that for a minute.
What we understood in those days was that nature was our religion. The stars were our heaven and our gods were in the stars, in the heaven. They spoke to us frequently, which we now understand is meteorites, comets and the like and of course you had the northern lights up there so often and I mean often we would see these colored flashes in the sky which we took as the gods the spirits were happy unhappy or whatever and it was interpreted by members of the tribe who would be experienced in these sort of things, and they would tell us you know the gods are happy because these colors are happening and whether of course that was predictable a lot of it from the from the sky. So our life was very basic. Now when you think as a human, when you come down for your first few lives, some of them were sent to us because the first lives are very basic, and they’re all about family; you get first lives for instance in Africa there’s a lot there where there’s no food there’s no money, it’s just community. And we had exactly the same. We didn’t have a lot of nature, as much as you do in your areas, but there was more than enough. And it’s very simple for us to understand.
Nearly everybody learnt all about nature. The different birds, the fish, the seals, the penguins, the whales, because there wasn’t that much to learn. So we didn’t study a lot, we didn’t have to, there wasn’t a lot to learn. And by the time you got to your mid-twenties you had basically learnt everything.
(Sharon)
And it was mostly to do with nature.
(Spirit)
And it’s all to do with nature, yeah. So after that it was a matter of looking after your family and teaching the younger ones. Now in my day the average life was around 40, and few past that. It was a very harsh environment but the body got used to that sort of environment and we rarely saw people from outside of our territories. Now that we know more and we understand more from being on this side, we can see what our area, what the Arctic was used for. It was used to keep a lot of very pure energy which we didn’t know at the time but we could access this energy unknowingly that there were any different energies. When we needed energy we would take it simply from what was based in the Arctic because it’s very pristine, it’s unused and it can be used for anything. So we would create energy, we’d have dances for various things, celebrations and we would draw in this energy and that energy was very strong and it was used a lot. So in general we were quite happy.
Yes, very happy and very stable. When you get used to a routine, for example when we had the long winter nights where it was dark for many, many months and then we get light for many, many months. But when it’s dark for many months, what do you do? You lose track of what you would term night and day and we would just hunt when we could during the day or during the darker hours, hunt or fish where we could, we’d cook a lot and we’d go to bed early and we would talk and we would tell stories to the younger
ones about the old days and history was passed down from one generation to the next. And this history as you can imagine as it got passed down from one generation to the next it got changed a little bit exactly the same as you have in your era. But it’s a little bit exaggerated and wasn’t done intentionally. It was done in part to amuse the children, to keep their attention or to really belabor a point so they would understand it. Especially when teaching with for instance the fear of polar bears and how they will attack and so on. We need to make sure that they do understand that and they do take the right precautions. So this information was passed down from one generation to the next and the old stories going back as far as we can remember were passed down by our great-great-grandfathers or whatever and we’ll just pass these on and any new stories which are created which were few and far between, and that is how a lot of first lives were handled in our particular area. So Souls would come down for the first time and in our group we would have a lot of new souls but you’d have two or three wise men if you like who’ve been down several times and it was their job to teach the new souls about what they to learn for their basics. As you can hear from my voice I eventually succumbed to lung breathing problems and which is very common in places where you get so much cold.
We spent a lot of time, you can imagine you understand frostbite how bad that is, but when you’re in the cold all the time it affects you, it gets right into your body and parts of your body tend to almost freeze, they almost start to stop functioning. Your blood supply goes into your central core to protect the organs that you have and your outer skin flesh would start to really freeze and this is complex. Now when you wore a lot of furs which we had to of course to keep the heat in. We couldn’t overheat because that is also part of a problem if we were for instance chasing something and you overheat and your body gets hot and then it becomes cold then the problem worsens. So a lot of us had breathing and chest problems and it was just we had various cures for that. A lot of us succumbed to breathing Yes, I have learnt an awful lot since then.
(Sharon)
Intensive weather, yes?
(Spirit)
I have no plans on going back to the cold, but it was quite an experience.
Now the younger generation – unfortunately they have learnt some horrible lessons. But by being introduced to a Western civilization most of these souls of course are new so they have very little natural ability to defend against something which is alien to them. So it’s very easy for them to succumb to alcohol, drugs and so on. Very little resistance. And so that was again a very good learning curve for all of us. And something which we were trying to change but will be changed with this new era which is coming up.
(Sharon) And that could not have been foreseen?
(Spirit) Yes that’s true, it’s part of evolving. There is one more thing I just like to share with you and that is where you get larger animals I was talking about hunting earlier on. Were you hunting larger animals like moose and elk and so on? They’re very big, very fast and they take an awful lot of very careful hunting. So we would go out in a group and we would understand where the herds were moving to and we would try and move ahead and try and ambush them so in a way we’d set up a group ahead in the right area and then a group would come behind them and slowly move them along and then we would ambush just one, and that would feed us for a long time.
Right I think that is all I have come to tell you.
(Sharon))
That was amazing, thank you.
(Spirit)
It was my pleasure and I hope it has been beneficial for you both.
(Sharon)
It was. Thank you
